Player Archetype / Play Style

Mark Williams’s player archetype is that of a traditional rim-running center with modern vertical spacing value, a big man whose game is built far more on size, reach, and interior efficiency than on perimeter skill. Defensively, he fits best as a back-line anchor who protects the rim, cleans the glass, and uses his length to erase mistakes around the basket, even if he is more comfortable near the paint than chasing actions far from it. Offensively, his role is fairly direct: screen hard, dive to the rim, finish lobs, convert dump-offs, and generate second-chance points rather than create shots off the dribble or stretch defenses with shooting. His physical traits do most of the talking, because at 7-foot-1 with a massive wingspan and huge standing reach, he plays above the crowd and gives guards an easy target around the rim. Altogether, his play style points to an efficient interior finisher and paint defender whose value comes from simplicity, size, and consistent rim pressure on both ends. (NBA)

Player Insights

Player Updates: The Lakers rescinded their trade for Mark Williams after a failed physical. Interestingly, the Lakers say they didn’t have a problem with his back, which is good news. The Lakers liked Dalton Knecht a lot and may have had doubts about Mark Williams long-term rather than short-term. They may have also just changed their minds on the deal and we would never know. I’m still a believer in Mark Williams for now. 2/9/2025

Player Updates: Insiders claim Mark Williams had back issues in Charlotte which is why he was traded to the Lakers. They also said that Williams’s back issues prevented him from lifting weights which was stunting his ability to grow as a player. I don’t think players need to lift much weight in today’s NBA because you can hardly touch players. Moreover, if anyone can fix Williams’s back problems, it’s going to be Lebron James and the Lakers. It may be a simple posture issue or something the Lakers can correct. Overall, his body looks fine to me but he has struggled to stay on the court. I’ve also noticed games where he strangely didn’t put up hardly any numbers. The bad back may explain these off days he has. 2/7/2025

Player Updates: Mark Williams looks really good. I think staying healthy a lot of the time is as simple as reducing your effort by a few percent points which is not always easy to do unless you are on top of things. Williams is in a position to reduce his effort slightly and still put up big numbers. He has that kind of ability over the competition. That’s all Jokic does IMO. Know when to play hard and know when to rest. 2/3/2025

Player Updates: The reason the Lakers rescinded the Mark Williams trade was because Luka Doncic didn’t like the deal. I suspected the Lakers may have changed their minds because there were unlikely any problems with Williams, a center who had been putting up big numbers recently. The Lebron James camp has noticed the power Doncic has over the organization already. Before the Lakers changed their minds on the Williams deal, Lebron said he was surprised the Lakers could trade Dalton Knecht for Williams, aka he was happier with Williams. 2/11/2025
