Defense is a weakness for the 23-24 Heat. The offense needs to be their best defense. What I mean by that is they still need to play defense, but the focus should be to play great offense first and then ensure you come up with the stops/stop the opponent more than they stop you.
Coaches always say defense wins championships. But players get confused about how to think about defense. Just because the defense is a difference-maker doesn’t mean you need to have the best defensive rating or need to focus on it more than your offense.
It means stop the opponent more than they stop you. When you realize this, you also understand that defense doesn’t have to be your focus. If your defense can’t win you games, ensure you play great offense. If you have great offense, your oppponent doesn’t have great defense.
For the Heat to be successful this season, they should do less ISO than average and rely more on set plays. The players aren’t great ISO players, but as a team they can be strong if the right players get open because many players on this Heat team are very good spot-up shooters.
