Player Updates: Stephon Castle finished his rookie season winning the NBA Rookie of the Year award (2024-25). By midway through his rookie season, it was clear to me that Castle was going to be a very good NBA player. While his usage was high for a rookie in the first half of the season, it wasn’t until Wembanyama went down with a season-ending injury that we saw Castle’s role expand. Castle effortlessly increased his scoring when there were more shots for him in the Spurs’ offense, putting up numerous 20+ games late in the season. Castle finished his rookie season as a top-70 player on our rankings, and I assume that his value only rises from here. He should have no problem being a top 50 player for his 20s with top 10 upside potential. I’m not concerned with Castle’s shooting percentages because he shot 75.5% at age 18 in college and shot numerous long bombs from well beyond the 3-point line in his Spurs’ rookie season. His mechanics are also positive, and he looks like a natural shooter. His driving ability is great for his age. Castle’s ability to hesitate and drive at various speeds has him considerably ahead of other players deemed by most analysts to be of similar value. The game is slow for Castle, and that’s good news for his upside as an NBA player. 5/19/2025
Player Overview: Stephon Castle is my favorite shooting guard in the 2024 NBA Draft. I think he has a good chance of being the best player in the draft class. Castle played for UConn in college and was drafted by the San Antonio Spurs, which I think was an excellent landing spot for him. The Spurs have struggled to fill the point guard position over the last few years and have 39 y/o Chris Paul this season who will need a backup to help him out. I know Castle wanted to be drafted by a team that planned on using him as a point guard. Castle should start his rookie season feeling optimistic about his learning and playing opportunities. 8/9/2024
