Player Archetype / Play Style
JJ Redick’s player archetype was that of an elite movement shooter, a high-IQ perimeter specialist who bent defenses with constant off-ball motion, deep range, and quick-trigger shotmaking rather than downhill power or isolation-heavy creation. Offensively, he thrived as a floor-spacing guard and secondary scorer, flying off screens, relocating into openings, punishing defensive mistakes, and keeping the ball moving within structure, while defensively he competed with effort and positioning but was more of a system defender on the perimeter than a true stopper because his game was built more on anticipation and discipline than length or top-end physical tools. Physically, Redick had solid size for a shooting guard at 6-foot-3 and 200 pounds, with good balance, stamina, and body control that supported his nonstop movement style. His overall play style was precise, relentless, and polished, making him the kind of guard who could change an offense simply by how hard he was to track, how quickly he released the ball, and how reliably he punished even a brief lapse in coverage. Player Insights
A standout at Duke, JJ Redick became one of the best outside shooters in NBA history. He is perhaps best remembered for his time on the Clippers when he played alongside Chris Paul and Blake Griffin. It was a Clippers team that ultimately fell short of winning championships, but they were legitimate contenders. The Clippers wouldn’t have known it at the time, but Ray Allen was close to signing with them during those JJ Redick years. However, once the Clippers signed Jamal Crawford instead, Allen chose to sign with the Heat. At that stage of Allen’s career, I don’t think he would have been strong enough to get the Clippers a championship. And I don’t think their shortcoming was the fault of JJ Redick either. Chris Paul and Blake Griffin always seemed like a duo that was going to fall slightly short of being able to win an NBA Finals series together. 2/11/2025
